Question

Sandmann Optiek in Apeldoorn is anything but a standard optical store. Commissioned by Studio Rublek and LODD interior architects, we provided some of the lighting that fits Sandmann’s story: craftsmanship, curiosity and real contact. The interior combines warm materials with raw, industrial accents. That’s why they structured the light so that each layer is visible, without turmoil in the image. On the street side, the workshop is deliberately in view. There, direct light shows the high-tech craft. At the same time, the surroundings remain quieter, so that attention naturally goes to the craftsmanship.

Challenge

At the heart of the store is the large circle bench with its distinctive shelf grid. This is where height, spaciousness and intimacy come together. Above the circle, fixtures enhance height and support routing. In addition, focused spotlights turn on frames, displays and greenery exactly where needed. The eyeglass walls are bright and evenly lit, so color and detail remain clearly visible. In contrast, the ceiling remains darker and quieter, creating a warm, almost loft-like atmosphere. The light sometimes appears indirect, but is basically very focused and functional.

Result

Further into the store, the lighting experience shifts with the function of the space. The six sales tables are given a relaxed, living room-like light image. This allows for calm fitting and consultation. In the four measuring rooms, the emphasis is on concentration and precision. Quiet contrasts and sufficient light on equipment and forms were chosen here. The delivery area, on the other hand, is a bit more festive, with warmer light and subtle accents on the new glasses. Thus, picking up becomes as special as picking out. Moreover, the lighting supports every step of the customer journey, from the first glance through the facade to the moment the glasses are actually the customer’s.
