What is Watt?

In the world of lighting, you inevitably come across the term “watts. But what do we actually measure by watts (W)? In this article, we take a closer look at wattage, its meaning and how it provides us with insight into lighting energy efficiency and performance.

Watts explained

Watt is a unit that measures power, which is nothing more than the rate at which energy is used or converted. A watt indicates how much energy is consumed in a second. It is like the rate at which electrical energy is converted into other forms, such as light. To explain it in simple terms, if a lamp has an output of 30 watts, it means that the lamp consumes 30 joules of energy in one second.

Lumens and watts

Traditionally, wattage was considered an indication of a lamp’s light output. The higher the wattage, it was generally thought, the brighter the lamp. However, with the advent of LED lighting, this is no longer valid. Today, light output is more accurately linked to lumens, which indicates the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source.

Energy-efficient lighting

One of the best-known features of LED lighting is the large reduction in wattage, with no loss of light quality. This is due to the efficiency of LEDs in converting electrical energy into light. Compared to traditional incandescent and halogen lamps, which wasted a lot of energy on heat, LEDs offer higher light output with much less wattage.

Sustainable lighting

At Lixero, we are committed to sustainability and energy efficiency. With concern for the environment and the urgent need to save energy, we chose to work exclusively with LED lighting. LED lighting is not only energy efficient, but also has a longer lifespan and minimizes light pollution. In addition, we work in a sustainable and circular way, both with people and environment.
