What is functional lighting?

Despite the fact that actually all lighting is functional, not all of it falls under the concept of “functional lighting. In fact, functional lighting has a specific function.

For example, the right lamp above an office desk will provide a comfortably lit workspace with at least 500 lux on the work surface. Another, specific, example is lighting above an operating table. This lighting allows doctors to do their work properly.

So the difference between basic lighting and functional lighting is the specific function of functional lighting. Basic lighting ensures that people can see a room, and functional lighting ensures that an activity can be performed properly.
